Edward S. Curtis made this c1904 view of a group of Navajo people in Tesakod Canyon, a setting he returned to in his effort to document Native life across the Southwest and Plains. Curtis, a photographer and ethnographer, worked at the turn of the twentieth century to record Indigenous communities before what he believed were rapid cultural changes, producing thousands of images that became part of his larger multi-volume project, The North American Indian. The canyon location places the subjects within the landscape that shaped Navajo life, and the print is worth noticing for how the figures are set against the rock walls.
