Mounted riders pass through a canyon in this c1904 photograph by Edward S. Curtis, a scene of movement rather than the posed portraits for which he is often remembered. Horses had become central to Navajo life by the early twentieth century, used for travel, herding and trade across the Southwest's open country. Curtis made photographs like this as part of his broader project to document Native peoples for *The North American Indian*, a multivolume work. Images of everyday travel such as this one preserve a way of moving through the land that changed quickly in the decades that followed.
