Edward S. Curtis made this c1904 photograph, which he titled *The Outlook*, and the title points to the picture's subject: a vantage point, a figure looking out over distant ground. Curtis spent the early 1900s photographing Native peoples across the American West, work that grew into his multivolume *The North American Indian*, published between 1907 and 1930. Viewers today should note that many of his pictures were posed, costumed, and arranged to suit his idea of a vanishing way of life, so the image reflects his artistic choices as much as a documentary record.
