Curtis's portrait of a man identified only as Big Head is one of the many studies he made for his multivolume project *The North American Indian*, which he began around 1900 to document Native peoples across the West and Plains before what he believed were fading traditions. The catalog number 295-05 places it among his work from about 1905, when he was producing many individual portraits alongside his photographs of ceremonies and daily life. Curtis often posed his sitters against plain backdrops and paid close attention to lighting and expression, so the image reflects his artistic choices as much as the sitter's appearance. Its tight framing draws the viewer's attention to the face and the details of dress and adornment.
