The title names a method of carrying loads with a strap pressed across the forehead, so the image points to labor and daily work as much as to dress. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1900, early in the years he spent documenting Native peoples of North America for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. Curtis often arranged his sitters, costumes and props, so the picture reflects his composed vision as well as everyday life. The headdress and clothing noted in its record are worth a closer look as part of that effort to preserve visual records of dress at the turn of the century.
