A portrait of a man identified only as Big Head, this print belongs to Edward S. Curtis's effort to record Indigenous people across North America in the early 1900s. Curtis made the image around 1905 and catalogued it under his own number, 260-05. His portraits of this period were often carefully posed and framed, so they show both the sitter and the photographer's choices about how Native people should appear. Viewers today read them as both documentation and as products of a particular, outsider's vision.
