Dakota veterans of the 1876 battle stand together on the ground where it was fought along the Little Bighorn River in Montana, in a group portrait made around the battle's fiftieth anniversary. By the 1920s, many of the surviving fighters were elderly, and some returned to the site for commemorations that drew both Native and white visitors. The photographer, E.R. Evans of Sheridan, Wyoming, registered the image for copyright, and it shows how the battlefield had become a place of remembrance as well as the scene of Custer's defeat.
