Little Daylight is the sitter named in this 1905 portrait, which the record places in Edward S. Curtis's ongoing effort to document Native peoples of North America. The headdress is the main subject detail, and it is worth looking at closely, since headdresses like this one carried specific meanings within their communities. Curtis often posed his subjects in traditional regalia, sometimes with clothing and props he supplied, and he worked on the premise that these cultures were disappearing. Viewers today read such portraits as both a record of the person and a product of the photographer's choices about pose, lighting, and dress.
