The name Sings in the Mountains identifies the sitter, which sets this portrait apart from the many others in Edward S. Curtis's series of Native American subjects. Curtis made the c1905 print as part of the work that became *The North American Indian*, a multivolume project published between 1907 and 1930 that aimed to document traditional life he believed was disappearing. The headdress is the notable feature here, and Curtis often posed sitters in traditional or ceremonial dress, so the image reflects his choices as much as everyday life. The Library of Congress holds the print as part of the Curtis collection, catalogued under number 216-05.
