Six leaders sit mounted together here, each in ceremonial dress: Little Plume (Piegan), Buckskin Charley (Ute), Geronimo (Chiricahua Apache), Quanah Parker (Comanche), Hollow Horn Bear (Brulé Sioux), and American Horse (Oglala Sioux). Geronimo, by then a prisoner of war after years of resistance to U.S. military campaigns, is the best-known name in the group. The photograph belongs to Edward S. Curtis's larger effort to document Native American peoples around 1900, a period when many tribes lived under reservation confinement and traditional regalia appeared more often in portraits than in everyday life.
