Iron Breast, a Piegan man, is posed with a tomahawk in this portrait made around 1900. The print is Curtis number 51 and was later published as plate 206 in a supplementary volume of *The North American Indian*. The Piegan are one of the Blackfoot-speaking peoples of the northern Plains, whose homeland spanned what is now northwestern Montana and southern Alberta. Curtis aimed in portraits like this to record traditional dress and possessions at a time when reservation life and government policy were rapidly changing those everyday practices.
