Three men in traditional dress and regalia give this picture its title, "The Three Chiefs," and place it among the Piegan (Pikuni), a Blackfeet-speaking people of what is now northern Montana. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1900 as part of his ambitious effort to record Native American life before he believed it would vanish. It was later printed as plate 209 in *The North American Indian*, the multivolume work he published between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often arranged his subjects and costumes for the camera, so the image reflects both the sitters and his own vision of an idealized past.
