Three Horses, the sitter named in the title, is shown in full regalia, with the feathered headdress and clothing that the record's subject headings single out. The portrait comes from Edward S. Curtis's long project to document Native American peoples, which he pursued through the early 1900s with the aim of recording traditional dress and ways of life that he believed were disappearing. Curtis often posed his subjects in studio settings, and his numbered prints, like this one (Curtis no. 274-15), were made to build a systematic record of individuals and their attire. Today the image is valued both as a portrait of a named individual and as a document of the clothing and ceremonial styles of its time.
