The record identifies this sitter only as the wife of Ow High, so her portrait is tied to her family rather than to a named individual of her own. Taken around 1905, it is one of the numbered negatives from Edward S. Curtis's long effort to document Native American life, work that would eventually fill his multivolume series *The North American Indian*, published between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress against plain backdrops, so viewers today read these images both as a record of particular people and as the product of his own artistic choices.
