Ow High is the sitter named in this c1905 portrait, one of the individual studies Edward S. Curtis made while documenting Native American peoples across the western United States and Canada. Curtis spent roughly three decades on his multivolume series *The North American Indian*, and his portraits were often staged with traditional clothing, regalia, and studio backdrops that shaped how viewers understood Indigenous life. The record files the image under clothing and dress, so the garments, adornment, and posing are central to reading it. Today Curtis's work is valued for its craft and also read critically as a record shaped by his own choices.
