The sitter, identified in the record as Pretty Paint, was a member of the Crow people of Montana, shown in dress and a headdress that Edward S. Curtis recorded around 1905. Curtis made portraits like this to document what he believed were disappearing traditions, and his sessions often had sitters wear older regalia rather than everyday clothing. The print is catalogued as Curtis number 215-05 and belongs to the Library of Congress's Edward S. Curtis Collection. Viewers should keep in mind that these portraits were arranged by the photographer, so they show costume and posing as much as daily life.
