Oz Sue, an Apache woman, sits for this portrait made around 1903, which Edward S. Curtis catalogued as number 114 in his series. The beaded necklace she wears gives the image much of its character and draws the eye alongside her face. Curtis began his ambitious study of Native peoples of North America around 1900, producing posed portraits that combined artistic composition with ethnographic intent. Images like this one shaped how many viewers understood Indigenous people in the early twentieth century, and they remain a subject of critical discussion today.
