Vash Gon, a Jicarilla Apache man, is the named sitter here, and Edward S. Curtis recorded him around 1904 or 1905 as part of his effort to document Native peoples of the American West. The Jicarilla homeland lies in northern New Mexico, and Curtis's portraits from that period were made during a long project that eventually produced the twenty-volume series The North American Indian, where this image appeared in the supplemental volume. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress and against plain backdrops, a choice that reflects his romantic view of vanishing cultures, so the portrait is best read as both a record of an individual and a product of that particular photographic vision.
