Chief Garfield, a Jicarilla Apache man, sits for this portrait made around 1905 by Edward S. Curtis, whose catalog number 194-05 places it among the studio and field portraits he gathered for *The North American Indian*. Jicarilla Apache people live in north-central New Mexico, and Curtis worked among several Southwestern groups during these years, documenting them as he understood a disappearing way of life. Curtis often posed his sitters in traditional dress and arranged settings to suggest an earlier era, so the picture reflects his artistic choices as well as the sitter's own presence. Viewers today read such portraits both as a record of individual people and as evidence of how photographers of the period framed Native Americans.
