Numbered 8 in a series of fifty, this small chromolithograph shows a Ponca chief, a member of a Plains nation whose homeland lay along the Niobrara River in present-day Nebraska until the 1870s. The heading "Illust'd Sweet Caporal" names a cigarette brand, and the card was likely packed with the cigarettes to encourage buyers to collect the full set. Cards like this were common in the 1880s, when tobacco makers used illustrated series to sell products, and many drew on popular ideas of Plains people rather than on portraits of named individuals. The record gives no personal name for the sitter, so the image is best read as a commercial picture of its era.
