Esh-Ta-Hum-Leah, identified in the title as a Sioux chief, is shown in this hand-colored lithograph drawn, printed, and colored at I.T. Bowen's establishment in Philadelphia. The print was published by F.W. Greenough around 1838, a period when lithography was a fast-growing American trade and Philadelphia was one of its main centers. Portraits like this one circulated widely among the public, so they reflect both the artistic methods of the day and the curiosity Americans felt about Native leaders of the Upper Mississippi and Missouri regions. Viewers today often read such images with care, since their makers were outsiders who shaped how Dakota people were presented to a white audience.
