This hand-colored lithograph shows Ca-Ta-He-Cas-Sa, or Black Hoof, principal chief of the Shawnee, whose name appears in the title as a portrait subject. Black Hoof led his people through decades of conflict and treaty-making in the Ohio country, and he was known as a skilled negotiator who sought to keep the Shawnee together as American settlement pressed westward. The print was drawn and printed at I.T. Bowen's Philadelphia lithographic shop and published in 1838, several years after his death in 1831. Its attention to clothing and dress reflects the period's interest in recording Native leaders' appearance, often for portrait collections of the era.
