Keokuk's portrait is distinctive for including Sauk and Fox children and for its attention to clothing, details that set it apart from many single-figure portraits of the period. Keokuk (c. 1788–1848) led a band of the Sauk and was known for seeking accommodation with the United States, a stance that made him a prominent and sometimes controversial figure as the Sauk and Fox faced land cessions and removal west of the Mississippi in the 1830s. This hand-colored lithograph was drawn and printed at I.T. Bowen's Philadelphia establishment and published in 1838 by F.W. Greenough. Philadelphia print shops produced many such images of Native leaders for a public eager to see them, and the costume and color work offer a useful view of how these communities were represented to American audiences.
