Identified here as chief of the Musquakees, also known as the Fox, Wa-Pel-La is the subject of this hand-colored lithograph. It was drawn, printed and colored at I.T. Bowen's establishment in Philadelphia and published there by F.W. Greenough in 1838. Portraits like this one circulated among eastern audiences curious about Native leaders, and the record's emphasis on clothing and dress directs attention to the costume as much as the man. The date falls during years of heavy pressure on the Meskwaki through treaties and land cessions in the Upper Mississippi region.
