Few portraits from this period name the sitter as directly as this one: the title identifies Wa-Kawn as a Winnebago chief, the Ho-Chunk people of present-day Wisconsin. The print was drawn, printed, and hand-colored at J.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment in Philadelphia and published there around 1841. In the 1840s, such portraits of Native leaders sold well to a public eager for images of Indigenous people, though they were often shaped by the tastes and assumptions of their makers and buyers. Hand coloring was applied after printing, so the tints on surviving copies can vary from one impression to another.
