Identified in its title as Ka-Ta-Wa-Be-Da, a Chippeway chief, this hand-colored lithograph shows its sitter in full dress. J.T. Bowen drew, printed, and colored it at his Philadelphia establishment, and it was published around 1841, when his shop was among the city's busiest producers of hand-colored Native portraits. Plates like this were often sold as single sheets or bound into large volumes on Indian tribes, which fed public interest in Native dress and ornament. Today the print serves as a record of Ojibwe clothing of the period and also as a product of a trade that presented Native people through a non-Native lens.
