The title names the sitter as Ne-O-Mon-Ne, a chief of the Ioway people, and the print was drawn, printed, and colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic establishment in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838. Hand-colored portraits like this one circulated widely in the 1830s, when American audiences were eager to see Native leaders in person or in pictures, and the Ioway were living in the lands of the upper Mississippi and Missouri river region as the United States pressed for treaties that reshaped their territory. The catalog emphasizes clothing and dress, so the print is worth studying for its record of regalia and for the way it presents a named individual within a period of intense political change.
