Tah-Ro-Hon, an Ioway warrior, is shown in this hand-colored lithograph, with the subject headings singling out his clothing and dress. The print was drawn, printed, and colored at I.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838. Portraits like this were popular in eastern American cities during the 1830s, when a growing public was curious about Native peoples of the western plains. Such images often mixed careful observation of costume with the artist's own choices about pose and presentation, so they are valuable both for the details they record and for what they reveal about how viewers of the period saw Native Americans.
