This print shows Not-Chi-Mi-Ne, an Ioway chief, drawn, printed, and hand-colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic shop in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1836. Portraits like this one were popular in the 1830s, when American printmakers produced images of Native leaders for an eastern audience curious about peoples whose lands were being opened to settlement. The sitter's clothing and ornaments are the main focus, so the print is useful for seeing the dress and style of an Ioway man of that decade. Because the coloring was applied by hand, each copy varies slightly in its pigments.
