Payta-Kootha is named here as a Shawnee warrior, and the print gives particular attention to his dress and earrings. It was drawn, printed and hand-colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic establishment in Philadelphia and published there in 1838 by F.W. Greenough. By the late 1830s, the Shawnee had been pushed out of their eastern homelands, so prints like this one reached audiences who knew Native people mostly through images. Because the color was applied by hand, the costume details differ somewhat from one impression to another.
