Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee leader known to Americans as the Prophet, appears here in the clothing and earrings that this hand-colored lithograph highlights. His brother Tecumseh is better known, but Tenskwatawa preached a return to older ways and a rejection of American goods and customs, and he helped lead the Prophetstown confederacy until its defeat at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. Drawn and printed at I.T. Bowen's Philadelphia establishment and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838, the print reflects the period's appetite for portraits of Native figures, which often circulated as stylized color images far from the people they showed.
