Caa-Tou-See is identified here as an Ojibway man, and the print's title and subject headings emphasize his clothing and dress. It was drawn, printed, and colored by hand at I.T. Bowen's lithographic establishment in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838. Portraits like this were popular in the 1830s, when American printmakers often showed Native people in traditional dress for a public curious about peoples of the Great Lakes and the frontier. Comparing the hand-applied color with the fine line work shows how much finishing each print required.
