Tah-Col-O-Quoit, a Sauk man, is the sitter in this hand-colored lithograph. The print was drawn and printed at J.T. Brown's lithographic establishment and published in Philadelphia by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark around 1842. It belongs to the portrait series for Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall's *History of the Indian Tribes of North America*, whose images were based on paintings in the government's Indian gallery at Washington. Prints like this one were widely sold in the 1830s and 1840s and shaped how many American readers pictured Native leaders of the period.
