Shown in a hand-colored lithograph that gives close attention to his clothing and dress, this portrait of the Seminole leader Osceola (spelled "Asseola" in the record) was drawn, printed, and colored in Philadelphia. Osceola led Seminole resistance during the Second Seminole War in Florida, a conflict over efforts to remove Seminole people west of the Mississippi. He was taken under a flag of truce in 1837 and died in captivity in 1838, and his likeness circulated widely afterward. This print, published around 1842 as the war was winding down, reflects public fascination with him and shows how artists chose to present him to a American audience.
