This hand-colored lithograph of Black Hawk, the Sauk chief, was published in Philadelphia around 1838, the year he died. Black Hawk led Sauk resistance in the Black Hawk War of 1832, after which he was captured and taken on tours of eastern cities that drew large crowds. The print was drawn, printed and colored at I.T. Bowen's lithographic establishment, and its subjects include the clothing and dress of Sauk people, a detail that reflects public interest in Native leaders at the time. Because the color was applied by hand, the tones and details can differ from one surviving copy to another.
