Made in Philadelphia around 1838, this hand-colored lithograph shows John Ridge, a Cherokee leader whose name is tied to the Treaty of New Echota, signed in 1835 and bitterly opposed by many Cherokee. Ridge had been educated in New England and wrote and spoke fluently in English, which made him an effective advocate for his people as the Cherokee faced removal west. The print was drawn, printed, and colored at I.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment and published by F.W. Greenough, part of the busy trade in portrait lithographs of the 1830s. Ridge was killed in 1839 in Indian Territory by men who opposed the treaty.
