Major Ridge, shown here as a Cherokee chief, was a leader whose life was shaped by the pressures of American expansion. He signed the Treaty of New Echota in 1835, which ceded Cherokee lands in the Southeast, and later moved west to Indian Territory. This hand-colored lithograph was printed at I.T. Bowen's establishment in Philadelphia and published by F.W. Greenough around 1838, the same year the Cherokee were forcibly removed along the route known as the Trail of Tears.
