This lithograph presents John Ross, the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, who led his people from 1828 until his death in 1866. The print was drawn, printed, and hand-colored at a Philadelphia establishment and published by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark around 1843, a period when Ross was a prominent public figure after the forced removal of the Cherokee west of the Mississippi in 1838 and 1839. Portraits like this one were widely sold in the 1840s, and the hand coloring shows the commercial craft of the period. Viewers should note that the image was made for a non-Native audience, so it reflects the expectations and interests of its publishers as much as Ross himself.
