Pee-Che-Kir, identified here as a Chippewa chief, is paired with a calumet, the ceremonial pipe many Native nations smoked to mark treaties and alliances. The sheet was drawn by an artist signed only as H.D., then lithographed and hand-colored at a Philadelphia shop and published by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark around 1843. It belongs to a wave of commercial portrait prints of Native leaders sold to an eastern public curious about peoples of the frontier, so the hand coloring and the pipe are worth a close look.
