Titled for Nayenezgani, the Monster Slayer of Navajo oral tradition, this c1904 portrait names a sacred figure rather than an individual sitter. The subject wears traditional clothing and body paint, which Curtis often recorded as part of his effort to document Native American dress and ceremonial life. Curtis made the image for his long project on North American Indians, which he pursued for decades with photographs, field notes and recordings. Viewers today should weigh such images with care, since the studio-style staging and the titles Curtis chose shaped how Native people were presented to the public.
