Catalogued by Edward S. Curtis as no. 189-04, this portrait appeared in volume 12 of *The North American Indian*, the multi-volume series he published between 1907 and 1930. The record identifies the sitter only as a Hopi woman, which was typical of ethnographic portraiture of the period, when sitters were often recorded as representatives of a people rather than by name. Curtis worked with Hopi communities in northeastern Arizona in these years, hoping to document traditional dress, hairstyles and daily life before what he expected to be rapid cultural change. Viewers today may want to consider both the care in the composition and the question of how much of the sitter's own identity the image preserves.
