Curtis titled this portrait "Modified style of hair dressing," and the girl's hair shows a variation on the whorled side knots that Hopi girls traditionally wore before marriage. Taken around 1921, it was published in the supplement to *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 428 among Curtis's studies of Hopi life in northeastern Arizona. Curtis often paired such images with notes on clothing and ceremony, and the hairstyle here offers a glimpse of how young women's appearance marked stages of life in a changing period.
