Curtis made this portrait of a young Hopi woman around 1905, and the photograph is best known for its attention to the elaborate whorled hairstyle that marked a Hopi maiden, a style worn before marriage. The image appeared in the supplement to Curtis's multivolume *The North American Indian*, published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930, where it was printed as plate 412. Curtis's project aimed to document Native peoples of the American West through portraiture and ethnographic detail, and this picture reflects that goal by focusing on the sitter's dress and hair as cultural markers.
