In this c1905 portrait, the whorled, squash-blossom hairstyle marks the sitter as an unmarried Hopi young woman, which is the meaning of the title's word "virgin." Edward S. Curtis made the photograph for his long project documenting Native peoples of North America, which became *The North American Indian*, a set of 20 volumes published between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often posed his subjects and had them wear traditional dress, so the picture reflects his artistic choices as well as village life in northeastern Arizona. Researchers value it mainly for the hairstyle, which signaled a young woman's stage of life.
