Heavy Shield, the name recorded for this sitter, is one of the numbered studies Edward S. Curtis made around 1900 as part of his effort to document Native peoples of North America. Curtis photographed many subjects in traditional dress and posed settings, and portraits like this one later appeared in his multi-volume series *The North American Indian*, published from 1907 to 1930. Today viewers often read these images both as records of individuals and as products of Curtis's staging and his romantic view of a vanishing way of life.
