An oasis" stands out on the board for its title, which casts a small patch of green water in the Southwest desert as a refuge. The record ties the picture to the Navajo, whose homeland in the arid Four Corners region includes places where seeps, springs, and streams support cultivation and grazing. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1904, early in the decade-long documentary project he later published as *The North American Indian*. Curtis often framed his subjects within their landscapes, so the setting is as much a part of the picture as the people.
