The title, "Tobadzischini," is a Navajo name, and the record files this portrait under both clothing and spiritual life, which points to Curtis's interest in how dress and belief appeared together in his sitters. Edward S. Curtis made this photograph around 1904, during the years he traveled widely among Native communities to document their lives for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*. Curtis often arranged his subjects and their attire carefully, so the picture reflects both his artistic choices and the traditions he hoped to preserve for later audiences.
