Titled "A point of interest" and dated about 1904, this Navajo group portrait comes from Edward S. Curtis, whose work in the early 1900s documented Native communities across the American West. The photograph was later reproduced as plate 36 in the supplement volume of *The North American Indian*, the multivolume project Curtis published in Seattle between 1907 and 1930. Curtis often arranged his subjects and settings to convey what he regarded as traditional life, a practice historians now read with some caution. Because the record classes it as a group portrait, it is worth paying attention to how the people are positioned relative to one another and to the camera.
