Two rounded whorls of hair bound over the ears identify this young Hopi girl's style, the squash-blossom dressing traditionally worn by unmarried girls. Edward S. Curtis, who spent decades recording Native communities for his twenty-volume *The North American Indian*, made the photograph around 1921 and published it as plate 423 in a supplement volume. The title's word "primitive" reflects the outlook of that project, which framed its subjects as vanishing and old-fashioned. Today the image is valued as a record of Hopi hair and dress in the 1920s, though its posed composition reflects Curtis's own choices.
