Black Hair is the name Edward S. Curtis recorded for this sitter, and the catalog headings single out the clothing and headdress worn for the portrait. Curtis made studies like this around 1905 as part of his effort to document Native peoples in traditional dress, work that grew into *The North American Indian*, a twenty-volume series published from 1907 to 1930. Many of his sitters were posed in regalia that he selected, so the costume reveals as much about his staging as about everyday life.
